Boosting your Pet’s Immune System

Improving your Pet’s Immune system

Many pet owners are taking preventative steps to help their cats and dogs maintain healthy immune systems, before any potential problems develop where you have to rush into your vet’s office for urgent help.

When your pet’s immune system is compromised, they’re more vulnerable to infections through many avenues – parasites, bacterial and fungal infections are the most common ailments affecting both dogs and cats.

Your pet’s first line of defense against these illnesses are their immune systems – medications can provide effective treatment if an illness becomes chronic or critical, but by helping your pets stave off infections they can avoid nasty ailments like kidney infections, ear infections, mange and other serious disorders. You’ll also potentially avoid more serious medical treatments or operations down the road, and you may consider getting a applicable pet insurance policy at this time as well.

Reasons for Compromised Health

If an animal is under severe stress such as that found in home environments where abuse is present, their ability to ward off disease will be severely reduced. Lack of exercise/play and poor diets are the two of the most likely culprits when animals become chronically ill – it’s even been suggested that a bad diet and a poor exercise environment can even affect an animal’s future offspring.

How to Help Boost their Immunity

Food supplements that may help:

– as in human beings, zinc can boost the immune system via increasing the white blood cell production and also promotes faster healing for any wounds your pet may have suffered.

– T cells play a critical role in your pet’s immune function, and Neem oil supplementation can play a critical role in maintaining or improving their ability to fight off ailments.

- Omega Fatty Acids have been well – researched to be beneficial to humans, and they can also help your animal’s digestion, improve their hair and skin, and even increase their energy levels. Fish oil, primrose oil and flaxseed oil are all excellent sources for omega fatty acids.

– One of the most common and effective cold and disease fighter is Vitamin C. Vitamin C has been proven to be both antibiotic and antiviral – another good supplement choice for your pet.

In Closing…

As mentioned above, regular exercise and/or play and feeding your pet a complete and nutritional diet will go a long way towards improving their chances against illnesses. If you choose, you can even prepare your pet’s meals at home – just made sure the food contains all of the critical minerals and vitamins required for normal immune functions.  Try to keep your home environment a happy and healthy one for your pet – they’re an important part of your family and your lives, and when they enjoy healthier lives you’ll receive more love and affection from them in return. Not a bad bargain, wouldn’t you agree?
