Foods That Can Kill Your Dog
Foods That Can Kill Your Dog
How many dog lovers just can’t resist their friend’s pleading eyes, their furiously wagging tails, imploring you to just give them one tiny scrap off your dinner plate, just this once?
Here’s some advice – don’t. There are so many foods that humans eat that are hurtful and potentially lethal to a dog that it’s just not worth it to take that risk, period. Not only do you have to be vigilant about not giving your pooch human food, you’d better make sure that any unforeseen scraps that are hidden to the naked eye are scooped up immediately as well. Dogs are well – known to have superior senses of smell, and they can ferret out food morsels about the size of a dime if they’re so inclined. Following is a list of all of the foods we take for granted as human beings, but are definitely not for our dog’s consumption, no matter how much they beg you.
Foods that can Hurt your Dog
• Onions – specifically, we’re talking about the chemical Thiosulfate, which is commonly found in many processed foods.
• Baby Food – this also contains Thiosulfate.
• Coffee – caffeine is particularly deadly to dogs. They typically suffer severe diarrhea, elevated heart rate and vomiting. Too much caffeine and your dog coild lapse into a coma, and even die as a result.
• Soft Drinks – there are only a few which don’t contain copious amounts of caffeine, so enough said.
• Anti Freeze – I have no idea why so many dogs go nuts for this stuff, but it’s a deadly substance for them, causing kidney damage and death in some cases. Make sure any anti – freeze you’re storing is well out of reach of your dog, just to be safe.
• Mothballs – there are so many things unhealthy regarding moth balls that you may consider dumping them altogether for your storage and replacing them with cedar wood blocks or other natural and healthier alternatives. Mothballs contain Napthalene, a deadly substance if ingested.
• Mistletoe – sure, you only bring it out during the Holidays, but don’t you dare let you dog get near it. Mistletoe can cause severe vomiting and even death if enough is ingested by your animal.
• Mushrooms – these can also be perilous for people to eat if they’re not careful, so imagine what could happen if you dog ingested a few of the wrong types. Dogs can sometimes find wild mushrooms during a walk in the forest, so be vigilant about any incidents where your dog eats something he’s not supposed to. Symptoms of mushroom poisoning include vomiting and diarrhea, and these can lead to severe liver damage and even death in some instances.
• Chocolate – most dog owners know all about this deadly human food, but it bears repeating for the sole reason that dogs have a huge sweet tooth, and go for any chocolate within their reach. Chocolate contains Theobromine, which can initially cause canine reactions such as constant thirst, hyperactivity, increased heart rate and almost constant urination. Furthermore, many of these symptoms may not appear for several hours after ingestion, making it all the more difficult to get the appropriate treatment in time. The most harmful forms of chocolate include dark chocolate, baking chocolate, coca powder and semi – sweet chocolate. Milk chocolate is somewhat less deadly, but still can cause your dog major health problems if ingested.
The bottom line – don’t let your dog eat any of the food you or your family eats. They don’t need it in the first place, and giving them the wrong food can cause them severe distress or even death if you’re not careful. So don’t take that chance in the first place – give them only dog food and acquire a good dog health insurance policy while you’re at it. Better safe than sorry – your dog will thank you for it by living a healthier and hopefully longer life with you.
